Custom Window Coverings for Skylight Windows

Table of Contents

You’ve got a home with skylights. They are dramatic, they are beautiful, and the light is amazing; you envision yourself in bed looking at blue skies and bright stars. Skylights may even be why you fell in love with your home. Perhaps you even added them.

While you can reduce the amount of electricity you use lighting rooms with skylights, you may spend a lot more cooling these rooms in summer.

Depending on your sleeping habits (or evolving sleeping habits as your family grows and changes), you may need more sleep than the bright sunlight of your skylights allows you. Waking up early and having your home hotter than you’d like are often not the only drawbacks to the reality of living with skylights. The harsh sun that comes through skylights can fade furniture, flooring, and fabrics.

So what can you do?

You can cover your skylights with Hunter Douglas Simplicity™ or SkyLift lifting systems and still keep all of the benefits of why you had them installed or purchased a home with them in the first place.

As with most custom window coverings, you do have options. Various fabric choices from Hunter Douglas Applause® Honeycomb Shades to Duette® Architella® Honeycomb Shades will provide you with different prices, fabric types, and colors.

Simplicity shades operate manually using a handle. Extension poles are available up to 120”. Simplicity operates on any slope or orientation and can stack on the top, bottom, right, or left side. Simplicity is also great for skylights on boats. The PowerView remote control option grants ease of operation.

SkyLift shades stack to the top of the window opening and have a tension cable that helps keep the shades in place. They can be operated with a crank handle, an extension pole, or a PowerView™ wireless remote control.

In the summer, shades to cover skylights are in high demand as rooms heat up, especially bedrooms since comfort in these rooms is so important. Depending on the client’s preference, we can install room-darkening or light-filtering skylight shades.

Seeing Is Believing!

In the project below, the client selected Hunter Douglas SkyLift in Applause Honeycomb shade in First Snow fabric with the wireless remote control. Our thermal-filter photos show how the heat level coming through the windows changed immediately after installation.

When speaking with a client during our initial in-home consultation, we are careful to set the right expectations. With skylights in a hot room, we can confidently say “You will feel the difference the moment the shades are installed.” The beauty of it is that every time we do a skylight installation, it’s our clients who walk in the room and say “Wow, what a difference.”
