Beyond Shades

Custom Window Coverings for Skylight Windows

applause_ultraglide_kitchen_1You’ve got a home with skylights. They are dramatic, they are beautiful, and the light is amazing; you envision yourself in bed looking at blue skies and bright stars. Skylights may even be why you fell in love with your home. Perhaps you even added them.

While you can reduce the amount of electricity you use lighting rooms with skylights, you may spend a lot more cooling these rooms in summer.

Which Custom Window Coverings Should I Choose?

Let the Home Decide

HouseBuilding a new house, moving into a new home, or remodeling your existing home are among the leading life-changing events that lead homeowners to purchase custom-made window coverings. These major moments don’t happen often. The same is true for new shades, blinds, shutters, or draperies. But when you need them, you want to do it once and you want to do it right.

When we walk into a home, often the client hasn’t purchased window treatments since their last move, which could be anywhere from a year to 15 years ago (or even more). The first thing we do is get to know you. All these small to ginormous holes in your home called windows set the scene and, in many cases, the comfort level in your home. To treat them right, we need to know who is going to be on the inside of the home and how we can make you the most comfortable.

Hunter Douglas Architella® Duette® Honeycomb Shades

A Honeycomb Shade That Delivers Every Time!

At Beyond Shades, when we consult with a client, it is important that we set proper expectations for more than how the various Hunter Douglas custom window coverings will look in their home.  It is just as important to be clear on how they will perform. Here are some of the many questions that we answer during our decision-making consultation.

  • Will it be easy to operate?
  • Will it let enough light in?
  • Will it keep the light out?
  • What is the difference between room-darkening and blackout?
  • Will there be cords?
  • How will I open and close the window covering if there are no cords?
  • If I select remote control, where is the remote?
  • Will it be easy to clean?
  • How do I clean it?
  • I have children or children who visit; are there any safety concerns with this product?
  • This room is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter; what will help?

Window Treatments for a National Park

When you think of National Parks, you probably think of the great outdoors. The awesome vistas of the Grand Canyon. The spectacle of Old Faithful at Yellowstone. The rugged mountains of Yosemite.

But there are quite a few national parks in our cities. Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The Statue of Liberty in New York.

And coming soon, Chicago’s Pullman neighborhood, a stunningly preserved 1880s town important in the history of architecture, urban planning, industry, and labor.

Window Coverings of the Future! Today!

In the classic science-fiction film Blade Runner, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) goes to the Tyrell Corporation to run the Voight-Kampff test, a psychological exam that can distinguish humans from the factory-made replicants. Deckard says that the light in the room is too bright to perform the test.

And then something happens that has always intrigued us at Beyond Shades

Libraries

Here at Beyond Shades, we have one team member that loves to read, and thus over the years has accumulated quite a lot of books. A lot.

By a lot, that is, thousands.

Of course so many books need bookcases. The books have been in three different homes: a 2-bedroom condo, a historic 19th-century home, and a modern split-level.

Each home had its own challenge. However, different but lovely solutions were found.
